UC San Diego Tennis Camps
Coaching Staff
The staff is composed of UCSD Student Athletes. The Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams are traditionally within the top 20 teams in the Nation. In 2010 we had several starters from both the Men's and Women's Teams helping us through the weeks and were fortunate to again to have a great staff. We expect the same in 2011.
Assistant Coach Timmer Willing
Timmer Willing enters his 11th year as an assistant coach for the Tritons in 2011-12, assisting both the UCSD men's and women's teams in all aspects of recruiting, travel arrangements, practice planning and fundraising.
Willing was named the ITA Division II Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011. He has been tabbed the ITA West Region Assistant Coach of the Year several times.
On the men's side he and head coach Eric Steidlmayer helped the Tritons to a Final Four showing in 2007 as well as NCAA National Championship quarterfinal appearances in 2005, 2006 and 2008. In 2011, the Tritons posted a perfect 20-0 duals record before advancing to their 12th consecutive NCAA postseason.
On the women's side, head coach Liz LaPlante and Willing guided the UCSD squad to California Collegiate Athletic Association championships each year from 2004 through 2010.
Willing earned a graduate degree in teaching and international relations at the University of San Diego in 2009 while also acting as a fitness trainer and coach for professional tennis players.
As an undergraduate, he earned a degree in exercise science and health education at Truman State University. A four-year letterwinner, he guided the tennis team to a conference championship and held several individual national and international rankings. Willing went on to become an assistant at Truman State for two years under Ramiro Azcui, helping with coaching, recruiting, budgeting and fundraising.
After his time at Truman State, Willing went on to coach at Division I Indiana from 1994 to 1996. In 1995, Willing helped the Hoosiers host the Big 10 Tennis Championships. The program produced its first-ever NCAA Qualifier for a doubles pair during Willing's stint. While at IU, Willing also completed graduate coarsework in kinesiology.
