Head Coach Eric Steidlmayer

Eric Steidlmayer has the most wins as a coach of the UCSD Men’s Tennis Team in the history of the University.  In the 2006-2007 season, the Tritons finished 15-6, qualified for the NCAA Division II National Tournament, and made it to the semi-finals.  It was the highest the Tritons had ever finished, and continued their streak of competing in the playoffs eight years in a row.  In the fall of 2007, Eric Rubens and Blake Meister were the winners of the ITA Division II National Doubles Title.  It has been a great year for Triton Tennis.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities at UCSD, Steidlmayer is currently the chair for the Division II NCAA Men’s and Women’s National Tennis Committee. He has been a member of the Board of Directors at the Barnes Center in San Diego and has been a USPTA Pro 1 for ten years. Prior to coaching at UCSD, Steidlmayer earned his Masters of Economics degree from UC Davis. He earned his B.A. in Economics as a UCSD Triton, and was the most valuable player of the Men’s Tennis Team during his senior year.

Without enough teams in the West Region, Steidlmayer’s squad plays with no conference affiliation during the year, forcing the Tritons to play one of the toughest Division II schedules in the country on an annual basis.  In the 2005-2006 season alone, the men’s team played 11 matches against NCAA Division I schools.  The team notched an 8-1 record against D-II institutions during the 2006 campaign.  The triton men have a positive and hopeful future as they advanced to the National Semifinals during the 07’ campaign.  Team members such as Blake Meister, and Eric Rubens earned All-American honors, and continue to proudly lead the team into the upcoming 2007-2008 season.  The Triton Men are enthusiastic as they continue to strive forward to their goal of winning a National Championship.

The lady tritons are another strong force, gaining a 3rd-straight California Collegiate Athletic Association in 2006, moving UCSD’s record to 30-0 overall in the last three years of league action.  The lady’s placed four student-athletes on the All-CCAA teams.  Out of the four, Marsha Malinow earned first team honors while the other three were names second team recipients.  One of the second team honorees, Ina Dan, earned CCAA Freshman of the Year accolades.  The Triton women are fired up and eager for another promising year.
